Calibration of veneers and panels in the furniture industry

Calibration is the process by which the thickness of veneers and boards is adjusted through sanding or machining, achieving uniform surfaces and precise tolerances. Although it may seem like a secondary operation, it is key to ensuring the quality of the final product. Importance of calibration


In panels (MDF, particleboard, or plywood), calibration ensures:

  • Uniform thickness, essential for structural stability
  • Better surface finish, facilitating coatings such as decorative veneers. Calibration removes possible “blisters” or breaks
  • Optimal gluing, by improving contact between surfaces

In veneers, especially rotary-cut ones, it helps correct irregularities and control the material’s behavior in subsequent processes. In fact, calibrating inner veneers is essential in the manufacture of molded boards, where multiple layers are glued and pressed in molds. Its main functions are:

  • Preventing internal stresses that may cause deformation or failure
  • Ensuring geometric accuracy in the curvature
  • Improving bonding quality
  • Ensuring homogeneous mechanical performance

In this context, small thickness variations can accumulate and compromise the final result.
